Day 18 Another Dashing Duracell Day

We did dash off in the darkness of the early morning from the lovely San Miguel Añbergue in Hospital de Orbigo. The helpful hospatalier had said "directo".. straight on. As we reached the last house the yellow arrow turned left but a big camino shell was directly ahead.
In the dark we pushed on and reached the N 120 which really wasn´t part of the map plan. We knew then we were on the alternate route and after following the highway we swung back on to the usual route. It all made for very interesting early morning conversation aswe navigated.
The country side was quite beautiful as we negotiated the few climbs.

No sign of Sao Paulo ,Louise, who travelled by bus out of Leon with us. She left her trekking pole on te bus and made a suicidal attempt through traffic in the morning dark to stop the bus as I waved my poles like some demented air ground crew controller trying to stop the bus.......she succeeded. Two days before Leon on the Meseta during a heavy hail storm the waste water pipe near the camino suddenly burst sending wate water all over her and the other pilgrims as they fled for higher ground. She said that she needed to get injections for a infected foot......She seems to be having an exciting Camino.

Another Aussie couple we met in Leon had run into the same hail storm and had to form a group of pilgrims to keep themselves from being blown away. They both had been severley infected with lice in an Albergue and also had to have injections, This is the first we have heard of this...scary

We walked the 16km into the city of Astorga. It was very busy with a festival and had some great attractions but we are a bit " cathedraled " out so we pushed on 5km to Murias wher we have a really nice Albergue Las Aguedas which so far does not have too many people.

We had lost a lot of our dash at the end of the day.

Still meeting many interesting people on the way .
Julie from South Africa is here . She had booked a 6.30am bus from Leon but she couldn´t get out of the Municipal Albergue we were in. Another german girl tried to get througfh ll the fire escapes and was equally unsuccesful..bit of a worry . Julie has to return soon and is doing 5 days on this section so we are running into her every now and then.

Betty said I should write something on Albergue life as this might be of interest. Will think about it as i know there are experienced pilgrims reading the blog and they would have their own ideas on it.
I should say that many of them are run voluntarily and all the hospitaliers we have met have always been courteous and helpful. Communal living does have its challenges but most people are considerate and it is not so bad.

We will have a smaller walk tomorrow.....mmmm one day at a time
